Wrestling aficionados will recognize the Von Erich family, known by the stage name "The Iron Claw", who were famous in the 1950s. Now their story will be made into a movie that will air at the end of this year, on December 22, 2023.
The film is directed by Sean Durkin, which is his third feature film portfolio after Martha Marcy May Marlene (2011) and The Nest (2020). The film, which stars Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, is produced by BBC Film and A24, with an expenditure of US$20.4 million US dollars or around Rp318 billion.
The movie tells the story of the heyday of a wrestler named Von Erich and the accompanying myth: his family was cursed. That even though Erich reached his golden age in the wrestling world, he had to lose his children one by one.
The story begins when Jack Adkisson began his career as a professional wrestler under the stage name Fritz Von Erich. His performance in wrestling was highly admired and he was even famous for an ultimate move called "The Iron Claw", a move where he squeezed his opponent's face into submission.
In the midst of his fame, Von Erich had to experience the bitter experience of losing his first son Jackie or Jack Adkisson Jr. in 1959. The 7-year-old child died horribly due to electric shock and drowning in the playground. He died and was found with his face in a puddle of melted snow.
At the time of the tragic incident, Von Erich was not there because he was having a wrestling match outside the city. He only found out his first son had died after returning from the match. His feelings were very sad when he returned home instead of getting a warm hug, but the funeral of his first child.
After that incident, the wrestler lost his third son, David, in 1984 at a hotel in Tokyo. Not only that, but he also lost his fifth son, 23-year-old Mike, to a drug overdose.
On the other hand, his career in wrestling is increasingly successful. However, the misery did not stop coming. He lost his youngest son, Chris, aged 22 to suicide by shooting himself in the head. The tragic incident continued with his fourth son, Kerry, who also chose to end his life 2 years after the departure of his younger brother.
Of his six children, only his second son, Kevin Von Erich, remains. In a documentary interview with the Dallas Morning News, Kevin stated that the myths that exist in his family are just lies and do not exist at all.
The Iron Claw movie focuses on Kevin Von Erich's point of view in telling the story of his family who triumphed in the wrestling world, but felt the pain of losing loved ones.
Meanwhile, this movie will star a series of well-known actors and actresses such as Zac Efron, Jeremy Allen, Harris Dickinson, Stanley Simons, and many others. The Iron Claw is scheduled to air on December 22, 2023 for the United States market.
