Christopher Nolan praised Taylor Swift According to him, Taylor used a smart way to distribute Taylor Swift's concert film: The Eras Tour.
Nolan said Hollywood studios are missing out by not releasing Taylor Swfit's concert movie. This is because she distributed it directly through AMC Theatres.
He said there has always been a tension in Hollywood between the familiar and the things that are expected to make money. "And that's at the core of how studios stay in business, but there's always a desire [among] the audience for something new, something fresh," he said while speaking at the City University of New York recently.
Nolan's three-hour Oppenheimer became famous in Hollywood as the movie developed into the highest grossing biopic since its release in July. Meanwhile, concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour made US$92.8 million at the box office after its release last Friday, October 13.
Nolan has his own take on the tricky theater business and where it's headed. "Whenever a movie succeeds that wasn't expected to succeed, it's an exciting thing for Hollywood....It's encouraging for filmmakers," he explains.
According to him whenever there is a movie that is not expected to succeed, the team will strive to exceed the highest expectations for the project. This is encouraging to everyone, both the studio and the filmmakers.
"That tension, that reality... between commerce and art, that formula never changes in Hollywood, because it's just the reality of the industrial process. Movie making is very expensive," he added.
The concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was released on Friday, October 13, 2023. The movie has made more than US$123 million or around Rp1.9 trillion at the worldwide box office. The movie, directed by documentary maker Sam Wrench, is now ranked No. 1 at the box office in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Mexico, Australia, Germany and the Philippines, according to AMC Theatres.
The movie is predicted to become the highest grossing concert film of all time. The record is currently held by Justin Bieber's movie: Never Say Never. It made $73 million in 2011 and another $26 million overseas for a global total of $99 million. Michael Jackson's concert documentary This Is It made 72.1 million dollars domestically and 181.9 million dollars globally in 2009.
